Pickleball Court Dimensions: What’s the Right Size?

Pickleball is among the fastest-growing sports in America, thanks to the relative ease of learning it and that anyone can play. Like any other sport, pickleball has its rules, and the most critical pertains to the specific requirements for a court.
If you’re a pickleball enthusiast and want to construct a court at home, it’s best to know about pickleball court terms, pickleball court dimensions, and the marked areas of the court. All lines on your court should be two inches wide and marked in an easy to see high contrast color.
Pickleball Court Terms
As you learn about pickleball court dimensions, be dire to familiarize yourself with these key terms:
- Baseline
This court marking runs at the back of the court parallel to the center net. When serving, the baseline can’t get crossed. Ideally, the baseline should be 22 feet from the center net.
- Centerline
As the name suggests, this line divides a pickleball court into two halves. It extends from the baseline to the kitchen.
- Kitchen
This non-volley zone extends seven feet from either side of the center net. In this zone, you can’t volley, and players often get advised to position themselves right behind the kitchen.
- Service Courts
These are the areas at the sides of the centerline. They are bounded by the sideline, baseline, and non-volley line. The service court needs to be 15 feet long and 10 feet wide to provide enough playing area.
- Sideline
On either side of the court perpendicular to the center net, runs the sidelines. They separate out-of-bounds from in-bounds.
Pickleball Court Dimensions
Playing Court
The United States of America Pickleball Court Association outlines that the dimensions of a regular size court are similar to those of a badminton court (44 feet long and 20 feet wide). A court of this size allows group-of-two games (two players on each side) and single-team games (two players against each other).
Although a regulation-size pickleball court has similar dimensions to a badminton court, net requirements differ. Pickleball requires the center net two be lower, at 34 inches at the center and 36 inches at the ends.
Outer Zones
In addition to the playing area, the outer ones also need to be considered when determining your court’s dimensions. The entire court should measure at minimum 30 x 60 feet, including the out-of-bound zones. This provides adequate room to move around the court and minimize the damage from wild or missed balls.
Center Net
The pickleball net should measure 21 feet and 9 inches from post to post. The outer post needs to extend beyond the sidelines by over one foot.
