The Best Pickleball Court Dimensions for Your Space

Pickleball can be an enjoyable sport for anyone who likes tennis, badminton, or ping pong, as it draws elements of play from each of these games. If you have the space, setting up your own pickleball court at your Las Vegas home can be a great way to spend time with your family and friends, or to get the practice you need if you are a more serious competitor. But how much space do you need for a pickleball court? There are different pickleball court dimensions based on the space available and whether you are converting existing surfaces or courts.

What are the Official Pickleball Court Dimensions?

If you will be playing pickleball competitively, or you have the room for a full court, you should consider constructing your pickleball court to match the official dimensions. The official court is 44 feet long by 20 feet wide, with additional room outside the playing area for running off the court after a ball is played. The recommended total size is 64 feet long by 34 feet wide, with the non-playable or out-of-bounds area included.

The court is divided into two halves by the net. On each side of the net is a 7-foot non-volley area. The baseline marks the end of the court at each side, and there is a 15-foot area between the baseline and the non-volley area that is divided into the right and left service areas by the center line, which is perpendicular to the net and the baseline.

Converting a Tennis Court

A popular option for many homeowners, sports facilities, recreational centers, or homeowner’s associations is to convert a tennis court into a pickleball court. A standard tennis court can accommodate four pickleball courts of the standard 44 by 20-foot size, albeit with a slightly reduced out-of-bounds area for a total size of 60 by 30 feet each. It is a great way to make the best use of limited space as pickleball gains popularity.

Minimal Size

If space is limited, but you still want an official-sized pickleball court, the recommended minimum pickleball court dimensions, including the out-of-bounds area, is 54 feet long by 24 feet wide. While this size is still playable, it leaves little room to slow down after hitting the ball during a heated game.

Custom Sizes

If you are converting a smaller existing surface like an asphalt driveway or a concrete patio to a pickleball court, or you simply do not have the space for a full-sized court, you may have to use some custom court dimensions. Ideally, you should scale the size proportionally to the official pickleball court dimensions.

Which Size Should I Choose?

Ultimately, the pickleball court dimensions you choose will be based on the space you have available. The larger the space, the better, as it provides plenty of out-of-bounds area for slowing down safely after a ball is played. If the court will be indoors, be sure to have at least 18 to 20 feet of clear space above the floor to avoid damage to light fixtures, ceiling tiles, and other items.
